The colouring is predominantly earthy and natural, this would have been sparked by the director to bestow a sense relatability and affinity towards Will and Sean. The first element I will dissect is the Colour used in this scene and the effect it has on the audience’s perspective of the characters. Will stumbles into the room as both the men stop shouting at one another and Prof.Lambeau takes his leave in a hurry leaving Will and Sean alone in which the scene begins. Lambeau is the award winning mathematician who originally discovered the self taught genius janitor Will at his University of MIT. The scene I am focusing on finds Will alone with Sean in Sean’s office where just prior, Will over hears the argument between Sean and Prof. All of which were focused on heavily in the production. In the particular scene I have chosen from the film I would like to highlight key aspects, Cinematography, Mise-En Scene, Sound, Colour and Editing. The combination of Van Sant’s direction and vision injects affinity and sentiment into an already well thought out narrative. The film was also written by the films starring figures Matt Damon and Ben Afleck ( Wills best friend) at the tender age of just 25. This film shows off its prowess by using diverse film techniques led by director Gus Van Sant. Sean Maguire (Robin Williams) who is Will’s therapist, helps untangle the knots that have developed in Will’s mind due to a tough upbringing, Maguire helps Will understand his true depth and value to the world and himself. The film explores the brilliant yet complex mind of Will Hunting who finds himself in a juxtaposition between therapy and jail. Not you.Good Will Hunting follows the poignant story of a troubled millennial named Will Hunting (Matt Damon) who is yet to find his true place and value in the world. Sean : Will, you see this, all this shit?
Will : So what does it say? Will has an attachment disorder? Fear of abandonment? Is that why I broke up with Skylar? Sean : Well, I gotta go with the belt there. Will : He used to just put a belt, a stick, and a wrench on the kitchen table and say, "Choose." Interesting nights were when he wore his rings. So I had to provoke him, so he wouldn't go after my mother and little brother. Used to come home hammered, looking to whale on someone. I mean, have you ever had any experience with that? Sean : Twenty years of counseling, I've seen some pretty awful shit. Will : You ever have any, uh, experience with that? Will: Oh my God! I'm so sorry! I'm so sorry Sean! Wanna talk about it? Sean: Will, you see this, all this shit? Sean: It's not your fault. Will: So what does it say? Will has an attachment disorder? Fear of abandonment? Is that why I broke up with Skylar? Sean: Didn't know you had. Sean: Why? Will: Cause **** him, that' why. Will: He used to just put a belt, a stick, and a wrench on the kitchen table and say, "Choose." Sean: Well, I gotta go with the belt there.
I mean, have you ever had any experience with that? Sean: Personally? Yeah.
Will: You ever have any, uh, experience with that? Sean: Twenty years of counseling, I've seen some pretty awful shit.
